Description

[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865]. [WARREN, Henry F., photog., attrib.]. CDV of the White House possibly showing Tad Lincoln in the foreground. [Washington, DC, 6 March 1865].

2 1/4 3 1/2 in. albumen print including margins, affixed to cardstock mount with printed caption on verso, "The White House, Washington." Attributed to Henry F. Warren, the photograph shows the North Portico of the White House. The young man in the foreground is thought to be Abraham Lincoln's son, Tad. Another example of this photograph is held by the White House Historical Association.

Henry F. Warren is probably best known for capturing the last living photograph of President Lincoln. According to Hamilton and Ostendorf's Lincoln in Photographs, Warren used Lincoln's son, Tad, to coax the president out of the White House just two days after his second inauguration, on 6 March 1865. Warren made three negatives of Lincoln that day on the south balcony of the White House. The date of the image featured in this lot is also 6 March 1865, meaning that he likely captured it before or after his impromptu session with the President.
